The Salzkammergut region is one of the most beautiful in Austria. Crystal clear lakes, mountain ranges, the Dachstein mountain and green alpine pastures determine the landscape and entice to numerous and exciting excursions.
The Salzkammergut region stretches over three provinces Upper Austria, Salzburg, and Styria, and has become famous thanks to its rich salt deposits. Already in the early 20th century tourism was influenced in this region by the Austrian royal court and numerous artists. This is the reason for the extensive royal hunting grounds in the “Höllengebirge” mountain range and why Gustav Klimt found inspiration at Attersee and the magnificent old villas in Seewalchen and Bad Ischl suggest how life in times gone by could have been.
A rich programme of cultural events such as concerts, exhibitions and theatre productions are evidence of this fact. The ‚Culture Capitol‚ Linz 09‘, and the festivals towns of Salzburg and Bad Ischl will be sure to offer you a unique cultural experience.
Other than Attersee Lake, Mondsee Lake, Lake Fuschl, Wolfgangsee Lake and Hallstättersee Lake belong to the many attractions within the Salzkammergut area. Whether you want to visit the Hallstatt world heritage site in the inner Salzkammgut region, the ice caves or the festival city of Salzburg, Advent in St Wolfgang or walk in the footprints of the famous artist Gustav Klimt, you will find just the place you’re looking for! Lots of different events for young and old invite you to have fun in the Salkammergut region of Austria.
In winter the region shows itself from its more romantic side and appeals especially to those who seek tradition, peace and tranquility. Many villages organize traditional Advent Markets. The Nussdorf Crib, and Advent at Wolfgangsee and Mondsee lakes are particularly interesting.
But there are also lots of opportunities for sports people in winter! In the ‘Postalm’ skiing region there’s something for everyone-even in summer, and the cross country skiing area of Oberaschau, which belongs to Nussdorf, is a joy to every sports person’s heart!
The smaller skiing regions of Kronberg, Wachtberg or Hochlecken are ideal for families.
